  • Jul 29, 2026fuse-overlayfs is an implementation of overlayfs in FUSE for rootless containers.CVE-2026-52791 · Other software · containers · reported by GitHubLow 2

fuse-overlayfs is an implementation of overlayfs in FUSE for rootless containers. Prior to 1.17, the release-1.x C branch preserves SUID and SGID mode bits in main.c during open(O_TRUNC) and truncate handling on a copied-up file, allowing a low-privileged process to leave the upper-layer file with mode 4777. This issue is fixed in version 1.17.

  • May 27, 2026In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: selinux: fix overlayfs mmap() and mprotect() access checks The existing SELinux security mCVE-2026-46054 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67High 7.1

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: selinux: fix overlayfs mmap() and mprotect() access checks The existing SELinux security model for overlayfs is to allow access if the current task is able to access the top level file (the "user" file) and the mounter's credentials are sufficient to access the lower level file (the "backing" file). Unfortunately, the current code does not properly enforce these access controls for both mmap() and mprotect() operations on overlayfs filesystems. This patch makes use of the newly created security_mmap_backing_file() LSM hook to provide the missing backing file enforcement for mmap() operations, and leverages the backing file API and new LSM blob to provide the necessary information to properly enforce the mprotect() access controls.

  • May 9, 2025In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ovl: don't allow datadir only In theory overlayfs could support upper layer directly referCVE-2025-37863 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67Medium 5.5

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ovl: don't allow datadir only In theory overlayfs could support upper layer directly referring to a data layer, but there's no current use case for this. Originally, when data-only layers were introduced, this wasn't allowed, only introduced by the "datadir+" feature, but without actually handling this case, resulting in an Oops. Fix by disallowing datadir without lowerdir.

  • Feb 10, 2021Overlayfs did not properly perform permission checking when copying up files in an overlayfs and could be exploited from within a user namespace, if, for examplCVE-2020-16120 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux kernel · reported by security@ubuntu.comMedium 5.1

Overlayfs did not properly perform permission checking when copying up files in an overlayfs and could be exploited from within a user namespace, if, for example, unprivileged user namespaces were allowed. It was possible to have a file not readable by an unprivileged user to be copied to a mountpoint controlled by the user, like a removable device. This was introduced in kernel version 4.19 by commit d1d04ef ("ovl: stack file ops"). This was fixed in kernel version 5.8 by commits 56230d9 ("ovl: verify permissions in ovl_path_open()"), 48bd024 ("ovl: switch to mounter creds in readdir") and 05acefb ("ovl: check permission to open real file"). Additionally, commits 130fdbc ("ovl: pass correct flags for opening real directory") and 292f902 ("ovl: call secutiry hook in ovl_real_ioctl()") in kernel 5.8 might also be desired or necessary. These additional commits introduced a regression in overlay mounts within user namespaces which prevented access to files with ownership outside of the user namespace. This regression was mitigated by subsequent commit b6650da ("ovl: do not fail because of O_NOATIMEi") in kernel 5.11.

  • Apr 23, 2020Overlayfs in the Linux kernel and shiftfs, a non-upstream patch to the Linux kernel included in the Ubuntu 5.0 and 5.3 kernel series, both replace vma->vm_file CVE-2019-15794 · Other software · Ubuntu · reported by security@ubuntu.comHigh 7.1

Overlayfs in the Linux kernel and shiftfs, a non-upstream patch to the Linux kernel included in the Ubuntu 5.0 and 5.3 kernel series, both replace vma->vm_file in their mmap handlers. On error the original value is not restored, and the reference is put for the file to which vm_file points. On upstream kernels this is not an issue, as no callers dereference vm_file following after call_mmap() returns an error. However, the aufs patchs change mmap_region() to replace the fput() using a local variable with vma_fput(), which will fput() vm_file, leading to a refcount underflow.

A vulnerability was found in Linux kernel's, versions up to 3.10, implementation of overlayfs. An attacker with local access can create a denial of service situation via NULL pointer dereference in ovl_posix_acl_create function in fs/overlayfs/dir.c. This can allow attackers with ability to create directories on overlayfs to crash the kernel creating a denial of service (DOS).
