XZ Utils provide a general-purpose data-compression library plus command-line tools. In XZ Utils 5.3.3alpha to 5.8.0, the multithreaded .xz decoder in liblzma has a bug where invalid input can at least result in a crash. The effects include heap use after free and writing to an address based on the null pointer plus an offset. Applications and libraries that use the lzma_stream_decoder_mt function are affected. The bug has been fixed in XZ Utils 5.8.1, and the fix has been committed to the v5.4, v5.6, v5.8, and master branches in the xz Git repository. No new release packages will be made from the old stable branches, but a standalone patch is available that applies to all affected releases.

  • Feb 26, 2025In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: do not double complete bio on errors during compressed reads I hit some weird panicCVE-2022-49167 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67High 7.8

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: do not double complete bio on errors during compressed reads I hit some weird panics while fixing up the error handling from btrfs_lookup_bio_sums(). Turns out the compression path will complete the bio we use if we set up any of the compression bios and then return an error, and then btrfs_submit_data_bio() will also call bio_endio() on the bio. Fix this by making btrfs_submit_compressed_read() responsible for calling bio_endio() on the bio if there are any errors. Currently it was only doing it if we created the compression bios, otherwise it was depending on btrfs_submit_data_bio() to do the right thing. This creates the above problem, so fix up btrfs_submit_compressed_read() to always call bio_endio() in case of an error, and then simply return from btrfs_submit_data_bio() if we had to call btrfs_submit_compressed_read().

  • Feb 26, 2025In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lz4: fix LZ4_decompress_safe_partial read out of bound When partialDecoding, it is EOF if CVE-2022-49078 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67High 7.8

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lz4: fix LZ4_decompress_safe_partial read out of bound When partialDecoding, it is EOF if we've either filled the output buffer or can't proceed with reading an offset for following match. In some extreme corner cases when compressed data is suitably corrupted, UAF will occur. As reported by KASAN [1], LZ4_decompress_safe_partial may lead to read out of bound problem during decoding. lz4 upstream has fixed it [2] and this issue has been disscussed here [3] before. current decompression routine was ported from lz4 v1.8.3, bumping lib/lz4 to v1.9.+ is certainly a huge work to be done later, so, we'd better fix it first. • Feb 26, 2025In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: soc-compress: prevent the potentially use of null pointer There is one call trace thCVE-2021-47650 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67Medium 5.5

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: soc-compress: prevent the potentially use of null pointer There is one call trace that snd_soc_register_card() ->snd_soc_bind_card()->soc_init_pcm_runtime() ->snd_soc_dai_compress_new()->snd_soc_new_compress(). In the trace the 'codec_dai' transfers from card->dai_link, and we can see from the snd_soc_add_pcm_runtime() in snd_soc_bind_card() that, if value of card->dai_link->num_codecs is 0, then 'codec_dai' could be null pointer caused by index out of bound in 'asoc_rtd_to_codec(rtd, 0)'. And snd_soc_register_card() is called by various platforms. Therefore, it is better to add the check in the case of misusing. And because 'cpu_dai' has already checked in soc_init_pcm_runtime(), there is no need to check again. Adding the check as follow, then if 'codec_dai' is null, snd_soc_new_compress() will not pass through the check 'if (playback + capture != 1)', avoiding the leftover use of 'codec_dai'.

  • Feb 10, 2025In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: zswap: properly synchronize freeing resources during CPU hotunplug In zswap_compress()CVE-2025-21693 · Computers, phones & browsers · Linux · reported by 416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67High 7.8

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: zswap: properly synchronize freeing resources during CPU hotunplug In zswap_compress() and zswap_decompress(), the per-CPU acomp_ctx of the current CPU at the beginning of the operation is retrieved and used throughout. However, since neither preemption nor migration are disabled, it is possible that the operation continues on a different CPU. If the original CPU is hotunplugged while the acomp_ctx is still in use, we run into a UAF bug as some of the resources attached to the acomp_ctx are freed during hotunplug in zswap_cpu_comp_dead() (i.e. acomp_ctx.buffer, acomp_ctx.req, or acomp_ctx.acomp). The problem was introduced in commit 1ec3b5fe6eec ("mm/zswap: move to use crypto_acomp API for hardware acceleration") when the switch to the crypto_acomp API was made. Prior to that, the per-CPU crypto_comp was retrieved using get_cpu_ptr() which disables preemption and makes sure the CPU cannot go away from under us. Preemption cannot be disabled with the crypto_acomp API as a sleepable context is needed. Use the acomp_ctx.mutex to synchronize CPU hotplug callbacks allocating and freeing resources with compr

When built for native Windows (MinGW-w64 or MSVC), the command line tools from XZ Utils 5.6.2 and older have a command line argument injection vulnerability. If a command line contains Unicode characters (for example, filenames) that don't exist in the current legacy code page, the characters are converted to similar-looking characters with best-fit mapping. Some best-fit mappings result in ASCII characters that change the meaning of the command line, which can be exploited with malicious filenames to do argument injection or directory traversal attacks. This vulnerability is fixed in 5.6.3. Command line tools built for Cygwin or MSYS2 are unaffected. liblzma is unaffected.

iq80 Snappy is a compression/decompression library. When uncompressing certain data, Snappy tries to read outside the bounds of the given byte arrays. Because Snappy uses the JDK class `sun.misc.Unsafe` to speed up memory access, no additional bounds checks are performed and this has similar security consequences as out-of-bounds access in C or C++, namely it can lead to non-deterministic behavior or crash the JVM. iq80 Snappy is not actively maintained anymore. Aircompressor is a library with ports of the Snappy, LZO, LZ4, and Zstandard compression algorithms to Java. All decompressor implementations of Aircompressor (LZ4, LZO, Snappy, Zstandard) can crash the JVM for certain input, and in some cases also leak the content of other memory of the Java process (which could contain sensitive information). When decompressing certain data, the decompressors try to access memory outside the bounds of the given byte arrays or byte buffers. Because Aircompressor uses the JDK class `sun.misc.Unsafe` to speed up memory access, no additional bounds checks are performed and this has similar security consequences as out-of-bounds access in C or C++, namely it can lead to non-deterministic behavior or crash the JVM. Users should update to Aircompressor 0.27 or newer where these issues have been fixed. When decompressing data from untrusted users, this can be exploited for a denial-of-service attack by crashing the JVM, or to leak other sensitive information from the Java process. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
